1 in 5 adults smoke in the UK says ONS

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has released its findings from the integrated household survey from January to December 2012. (Release)

Amongst the findings were that Scotland and the north of England have the highest proportion of smokers as compared to London and the South East which have the lowest. A total of 20 per cent of UK adults are smokers.

77 per cent of men and 75 per cent of women said they were in good health (using a scale of measures for 'good' and 'bad'). Only 9.3 per cent of adults aged between 16 and 24 said they were not in good health. Amongst those aged 65 and over 43 per cent report not being in good health. 

Regional differences in the perception of good health were identifiable, with Wales reporting the lowest rate of perceived good health (73 per cent) in terms of countries, and the North East of England reporting 71 per cent – the lowest figure regionally. 79 per cent of individuals in London and the South East said they had good health – the highest rate across the UK.

In 2012, 1.5 per cent of adults identified as Gay, Lesbian or Bisexual. Adults between the ages of 16-24 were more likely to identify themselves as Gay, Lesbian or Bisexual compared to adults aged 65 and over 2.6 per cent and 0.4 per cent respectively.
