Russian warship Yaroslav Mudryy tracked by Royal Navy’s HMS Argyll entering English Channel
A Russian warship has been tracked by the Royal Navy entering the English Channel for the second time in three months.
The Russian warship – called Yaroslav Mudryy or Yaroslav the Wise – is a Neustrashimy class frigate and was sailing with an accompanying tanker, the Kola.
HMS Argyll, a Type 23 frigate complete with artisan radar, was dispatched to keep an eye on the ships.
It used a Lynx helicopter and sensors to locate and monitor the movement of the two vessels as they returned from the Mediterranean.
The Navy took over from French surveillance “under the Nato agreement whereby alliance nations co-operate to monitor activity”, sending in its “Fleet Ready Escort, a warship maintained at high-readiness for tasks in UK waters”.
In November, a convoy of Russian warships entered the Englich Channel to undertake a series of exercises. They were similarly monitored by British patrols.
