The government has advised British holidaymakers travelling to Greece that they may be faced with limited access to banking services as the country's bailout negotiations flounder leaving banks under pressure supply the country with cash.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has updated its advice to travellers, with a specific warning that access to banks and ATM's may become "limited at short notice".

"Visitors to Greece should be aware of the possibility that banking services – including credit card processing and servicing of ATMs – throughout Greece could potentially become limited at short notice," it said, advising travellers to ensure they carry enough cash in euros to cover emergencies and unexpected delays.

The FCO said the it mirrors similar advice to travellers from the US and Australia and expects similar updates from the rest of Europe.

Germany and the Netherlands both issued similar advice today as the European Central Bank capped emergency funds to the country ahead of a referendum on new bailout deal terms.
