Button ditches the fast lane to promote life on two wheels

Formula One hopeful Jenson Button took a spin around the Science Museum yesterday, not in his F1 McLaren Honda, but on a Boris bike. He was launching the Summer of Cycling festival promoted by new city bike sponsors Santander.

Riders are encouraged to use two-wheels to experience the bank’s once-in-a-lifetime events. These include the museum, Totally Thames – all to do with the river – Open House, which toasts the city’s architecture, and London Zoo.

Button, 35 and Santander’s cycle ambassador, said it was his first time at the Science Museum: “I love engines, so I got a good look at everything. I think [the festival] will be wicked. You see so much when you’re on a bike, and I think it will be great for friends and families. To go to the zoo would be pretty cool.” Ah bless. Want more info? Go to www.santander.co.uk/uk/cycles

▀ Jewellery and alcohol fans (so everyone), rejoice! Selfridges has just re-opened its Tiffany & Co boutique, with an interactive Big Apple experience to boot. Guests will enter the store’s exhibition through New York subway-esque turnstiles, arriving at a recreation of Fifth Avenue and 57th Street, the site of the first store. Guests can sip authentic old-fashioned cocktails at the bar while they shop. Go go go!

▀ Last night saw stars of the financial district come together to witness the grand finals of a nerve-wracking school debate at Deutsche Bank’s London offices. Deutsche Bank managing director Francesco Curto joined the firm’s deputy general Simon Dodds in judging teens from Wimbledon’s Ursuline School and Dagenham’s Robert Clack School in a highly competitive discussion on sustainability. According to Curto, Deutsche Bank, which helps to fund competition organisers Debate Mate, could be using the event to headhunt the firm’s future recruits. Curto said: “We love to support these types of charities which mentor kids. The children were incredibly prepared and it’s very impressive to see.” Quick, time to update that CV…
