Brendan Rodgers blasts wastefulness as Europa victory eludes Liverpool

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers blasted his side’s wastefulness as their wait for an opening Europa League victory of the season continued after failing to overcome FC Sion at Anfield last night.

 

Former Southampton midfielder Adam Lallana gave the Reds an early advantage, although their lead did not last long as Ghanaian forward Ebenezer Assifuah struck with a subtle finish. Lallana and Belgium hitman Divock Origi were both denied by visiting goalkeeper Andris Vanins as Liverpool were unable to dispatch a side currently languishing mid-table in the Swiss Super League.

 

“We had a number of chances throughout the match and you’ve got to be clinical,” said Rodgers. “We scored a good first goal and had good chances, they weren’t half chances,  they were real good chances and unless you score them you won’t win a game, especially as this level. We’re disappointed because we have to win a game like that.”

 

Winless Liverpool are second in Group B after successive draws and trail FC Sion by two points, and now face consecutive European matches against Russian side Rubin Kazan.
