People are freaking out about housing in the UK – and the panic hasn't been this bad since the 1970s.
According to the latest Ipsos Mori Issues Index for October, 20 per cent of people see housing as the most important issue facing Britain today.
The only time Brits have seen housing as even more of an issue for the country was in the autumn of 1974, a time of significant political upheaval across the UK.
Economists at UBS warned last week that London's housing market is teetering on the brink of a crash after a period of “explosive” growth has turned it into one of the most overvalued cities in the world, while data from YourMove and Reeds Rains showed that record numbers of aspiring homeowners believe that buying a property is now out of reach.
Meanwhile, proof of a UK-wide housing supply shortage was clear to see in the September Property Supply Index from online estate agents HouseSimple.com. That survey showed new property listings had fallen by 6.6 per cent across the UK between August and September.
