Irwin Mitchell just shy of top ten following Thomas Eggar merger

Law firms Irwin Mitchell and Thomas Eggar revealed they are merging today, creating a business worth £250m.

The merged firm is set to place as the 11th biggest in the UK, just short of a top ten position, in a league table compiled by trade magazine The Lawyer. It will also rank within top five for private client business.

Speaking to Morning Wire, Andrew Tucker, group chief executive of Irwin Mitchell, said: “Most of our peer group in terms of size and revenue focus principally on services to businesses, if not exclusively, so we are a bit different in that respect”

Tucker added: “I’m not usually concerned in size just for its own sake or where we are in the league table necessarily.”

This merger is the latest in something of an expansion frenzy for Irwin Mitchell, as this is the eighth deal it has completed since 2012. The merger with Thomas Eggar, however, is the biggest in Irwin Mitchell’s 103 year history.

The merger is set to complete in December. Thomas Eggar will transfer its employees into Irwin Mitchell’s business and, in the first half of 2016, will adopt the Irwin Mitchell brand.
