The Times is dropping its focus on online breaking news for an "edition-based model".

A new website, merging Times and Sunday Times content, has been launched today.

Publisher News UK said the newspapers will produce one "core" edition per day, with updates to the edition published on the website and apps at 9am, noon and 5pm. Updates will be at 12pm and 6pm on weekends.

The Times and Sunday Times will "retain the flexibility to follow a big breaking news story if the editors believe it is warranted".

Times editor John Witherow said: "The power of an edition has endured at The Times for more than 230 years. Our challenge is to update this concept for the digital age: to put readers first and cut through the babble."

Rupert Murdoch-owned News UK reported last week that Times Newspapers – which incorporates the Times and Sunday Times – made a pre-tax profit of £10.9m in the year to 28 June 2015. This was up from a loss of £935,000 the year before.
