Work in Canary Wharf? Charitable hot drink vendor Change Please is coming to the Docklands, so now there’s an ethical way to get your morning coffee
Canary Wharfers are getting a new way to have their morning coffee fix.
If you've been mulling the ethics of where you get your morning coffee from, fret no more: there's a new solution in the Docklands.
Change Please, founded by former City trader Cemal Ezel and the Big Issue, transforms the lives of London's homeless and gets them working as vendors, is about to launch its first Canary Wharf service after expanding rapidly in the last four months.
The charity gets Londoners back on their feet by retraining them as baristas and paying them a living wage to run coffee stands throughout the capital. Change Please has employed 12 homeless people since the project's launch in November, and plans to help even more with its new Canary Wharf stand.
To mark the project's success, Change Please has released a video devoted to one of its own employees.
Over the next year, Change Please aims to roll out 28 carts across London and the rest of the UK. In the meantime, the coffee beans themselves are available for everyone to buy online for home use and office delivery.
After six months, the baristas will have developed the skills needed to enter the mainstream workforce and find a longer-term job, with Change Please seeking to work with companies in the food and beverage industries as well as legal and banking sectors, to help the team get a foot on the ladder.
