Donald Trump has clinched enough support to guarantee him Republican presidential nomination after winning over a small handful ahead of another round of voting.

Republicans will gather in Cleveland in July to formally announce their presidential nominee, but The Associated Press reports Trump has now won over enough party members to grant him the nomination.

According to a count by Associated Press, a small handful of delegates, including Oklahoma GOP chairwoman Pam Pollard gives the tycoon 1,238 backers, one more than needed to secure the nomination, with a further 303 at stake in state primaries on 7 June.

It marks the latest stage in the remarkable rise of Trump, last man standing for a role that he was long considered to be an outsider for.

Trump defeated all of his more experienced rivals, which included New Jersey governor Chris Christie, Texas senator Ted Cruz and Florida senator Marco Rubio.

En route to the nomination, Trump has repeatedly promised the construction of a wall between the US and Mexico, as well as a ban on Muslims entering the country.

However, Trump has also suggested he supports increased taxes on the wealthy, as well as a boosted minimum wage.
