Time Inc confirms Myspace hacking

Social networking site Myspace was hacked over the weekend, with user login data made available in an online hacker forum.

Myspace's owner Time Inc confirmed the data breach today, and said the compromised information included Myspace usernames, passwords and email addresses, from the old Myspace platform prior to 11 June, 2013 – the date that the social network was relaunched with "significant steps" taken to strengthen security.

As Myspace does not collect users' credit card details, no financial information was leaked in the hack.

Myspace said it believes the data breach is attributed to Russian Cyberhacker ‘Peace'.

"This same individual is responsible for other recent criminal attacks such as those on LinkedIn and Tumblr, and has claimed on the paid hacker search engine LeakedSource that the data is from a past breach," the company said. "This is an ongoing investigation, and we will share more information as it becomes available."

Time Inc's chief executive Jeff Bairstow said: “We take the security and privacy of customer data and information extremely seriously- especially in an age when malicious hackers are increasingly sophisticated and breaches across all industries have become all too common. Our information security and privacy teams are doing everything we can to support the Myspace team.”
