A decision on the expansion of London’s airports will reportedly come within two weeks

A decision on airport expansion will reportedly be announced within the next two weeks.

According to PoliticsHome, the government has pencilled in 7 July for an announcement, just one day after the publication of the Chilcot Inquiry into the Iraq War.

A source close to the matter told Morning Wire that a decision is currently expected “before the middle of July”, although a Brexit vote could still change plans.

The Davies Commission recommended last July that a new runway should be built at Heathrow, but the formal decision was kicked into the long grass by the government in December in order to allow for more study on the environmental impact.

A Department for Transport spokeswoman declined to comment on the date of an announcement, but said: "The case for aviation expansion is clear – but it’s vitally important we get the decision right so that it will benefit generations to come.

“The Government is continuing to consider all three shortlisted options and the Commission’s evidence, as well as progressing the package of further work announced in December.

"This includes working on all the shortlisted locations to develop the best possible package of measures to mitigate the impacts on local people.

“This work will conclude by the summer.”
