Angela Merkel: Don’t be “nasty” during Brexit talks
German Chancellor Angela Merkel today said "it shouldn't take forever" for Britain to deliver formal notification to leave the European Union.
Speaking at a news conference, Merkel said: "To be honest, it shouldn't take forever, that's right — but I would not fight over a short period of time."
The German leader called for a "objective, good" climate for discussing Britain's exit from the EU and said that there is no need to be "nasty" during talks.
She said: "[There is] no need to be particularly nasty in any way in the negotiations; they must be conducted properly."
Earlier today French and German authorities said that they wanted a British Prime Minister to be appointed as soon as possible.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said: “We will begin this process immediately, this has to be clear — the British people have spoken."
Ayrault added that "the 27 other EU members states have to be respected, as well”.
German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said: “This process has to begin as soon as possible, so that we’re not left hanging.”
