China helped drive nuclear power growth to its highest level in 25 years, according to the International Energy Agency.

Speaking at a nuclear conference in Paris, Fatih Birol, the IEA's executive director, said: "We have never seen such an increase in nuclear capacity addition, mainly driven by China, and also South Korea and Russia."

"It shows that with the right policies, nuclear capacity can increase."

Global addition to capacity in 2015 hit 10.2 gigawatts, the highest growth in a quarter-century.

Birol added that in order for the world to meet its emissions targets, the share of nuclear power must jump from 11 per cent today to close to 20 per cent by 2040.

Nearly 200 nations reached the landmark accord last December in Paris, to cut carbon dioxide emissions and limit global warming below two degrees.
