Westfield to create 8,000 new jobs at Stratford centre as part of expansion plans
Shopping centre group Westfield is planning to create 8,000 new jobs at its Stratford centre in east London within the next 10 years.
The jobs, mainly retail roles, will be created as part of expansion plans that also include up to 800,000 square feet of office space and 120,000 square feet of retail space, in addition to 1,225 new residential homes.
Westfield said it was renewing its commitment to bring employment, jobs and skills to local people in the Stratford area ahead of the beginning of the Rio Olympics next week.
“Since 2012, Westfield and the London Borough of Newham have pioneered an approach to ensuring that local residents benefit from employment opportunities, as evidenced by the 3,700 residents employed within Westfield Stratford City through the council’s Workplace service," Dr Paul Brickell, executive director of regeneration and community partnerships for the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) said.
"The LLDC has now built on this approach as part of the wider development of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park to ensure that the local community continues to benefit from investment coming into the area in the long-term, with over 2,000 local people working on the park to date.”
Westield also has a centre in West London, at White City near Shepherd's Bush.
