The takeover of TalkSport owner Wireless by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp has become “unconditional”, the companies have announced.

Wireless has received 92.17 per cent backing from shareholders for the takeover, which will lead to the company being delisted from the Irish Stock Exchange.

The offer remains open for other shareholders to accept until further notice.

The announcement said: “Shareholders are strongly recommended to accept the offer as the cancellation of listing would significantly reduce the liquidity and marketability of any Wireless shares not acquired by News Corp.”

News Corp announced the £220.3m takeover deal for Wireless Group, which changed its name from UTV Media in March after the sale of its TV assets to ITV, at the end of June.

News UK boss Rebekah Brooks said at the time: “The Wireless Group represents an opportunity for us to take advantage of its strong radio presence to build on our growing digital success story and to bring some of the best journalistic and broadcasting talent into one group.”
