Hillary Clinton accuses FBI chief of double standards

The Clinton campaign has hit back at the FBI, accusing its chief James Comey of "double standards" for trying to hide evidence of Russia's backing of Republican nominee Donald Trump.

Clinton's campaign manager said it "defied all logic" for Comey to reveal the investigation into Clinton's emails, while refusing to speak about Russia's alleged involvement with Trump's campaign because it was too close to election day.

According to the Guardian, Robby Mook, Clinton's campaign manager, told reporters: "It is impossible to view this as anything less than a blatant double standard.

"Through these two decisions he shows he favours acting alone and without consulting…these are not the hallmarks of a responsible investigation."

The comments come after a CNBC report revealed that Comey did not want to accuse Russia of meddling in the US election, because it might disrupt voting.

The report claims Comey made sure the FBI's name was not on a document put out by the US government.

A report in Slate has claimed that Trump has a server in Trump Tower that has been communicating with Russia, which the Clinton campaign said that Trump "took steps to conceal".

Trump has been closing the gap on Clinton after the FBI announced it was launching a fresh probe into Hillary Clinton's emails. He was just one point behind Clinton in a recent national poll. Last week, Clinton had a 12 point margin.

But with 650,000 emails to sift through, it is unlikely the FBI will be able to conclude its investigation before election day.

The Democratic leader in the US Senate says Comey may have broken the law by revealing the bureau was investigating the emails. Comey has been accused of violating an act barring officials from influencing an election.
