General Motors recalls 1m pickup trucks and SUVs in the US over faulty power-assisted steering
General Motors (GM) is recalling more than a million pickup trucks and SUVs in the US over a fault to its power-assisted steering that can shut down while in use.
GM is recalling certain models of the Chevrolet, including the 2015 Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500 pickups. The Chevy Tahoe and Suburban SUVs have also been affected, as has the 2015 Cadillac Escalade and some of the GMC Yukon SUVs.
GM said the global recall totalled 1.2m vehicles, with Canada and Mexico the largest non-US markets affected. It said it was aware of 30 crashes, two injuries but no fatalities. Customers can contact dealers immediately to schedule repairs.
In its report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) regulator, GM said: "A defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2015 model year Chevrolet Silverado LD, Suburban, and Tahoe vehicles; GMC Sierra LD and Yukon vehicles; Cadillac Escalade vehicles. These vehicles may experience a temporary loss of EPS assist followed by a sudden return of EPS assist, particularly during low-speed turning maneuvers. The loss and sudden return of EPS assist typically happens within a one second period and is caused by an electrical/software issue."
"If EPS assist is lost and suddenly returned, the driver could have difficulty steering the vehicle, especially at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash."
The regulator it was still missing "critical, required information" for the safety recall and said the information must be supplied by GM within five working days.
In 2014, the car maker recalled nearly 800,000 pickup trucks worldwide owing to a similar problem.
