Met Office warns UK of snow as Londoners brace for colder weather
The Met Office has issued yellow warnings for snow throughout the UK as Londoners prepare for the arrival of a severe cold snap next week.
The snow warnings are expected to last into Friday night across Scotland, northern England and the north Midlands, with the Met Office advising commuters to be aware of longer journey times by road, bus, and train.
Those in the affected areas can expect a combination of rain, sleet and snow, with snow possibly reaching up to 4cm in Wales and across England and Scotland.
Londoners can expect temperatures to reach near freezing tonight, with the weekend being largely cloudy with the potential for frosts and rain.
The UK forecast for the weekend shows it remaining cold, with snow and rain likely throughout the country. Heavy rain and strong winds will accompany winter blues on Monday and Tuesday, with some snow likely making its way to Scotland.
In addition to the yellow warnings, the Met Office issued an a Level 3 Amber weather alert for severe weather action in parts of England. The alert, which will be in place until Wednesday morning, was accompanied by a health warning for vulnerable patients to avoid the cold weather.
Public Health England (PHE) advised people to get a free flu jab to protect against the cold snap.
“Experience shows us that every winter thousands of people are seriously affected and even die from illnesses linked to the cold. Protecting yourself from the cold may seem like common sense but many people don’t manage to keep themselves warm enough,” Dr. Emer O'Connell of PHE said.
“All of us should be heating our homes to at least 18C, keeping up to date with weather forecasts and planning our days around them – simple steps can really help protect against the cold.”
