Brexit drives support for Scottish independence to 49 percent

Brexit has driven support for Scottish independence to 49 per cent, the highest point in the last few years, according to the latest poll.

A poll by Yougov showed that support for Scotland breaking away from the United Kingdom has increased from 45 per cent in June last year, Reuters reported.

A referendum on Scottish Independence in 2014 saw Scots vote to remain part of the UK, however, Scotland also voted to remain in the European Union in 2016.

The poll also found that 53 per cent of Scots would not support a second referendum on independence in the next five years, as Scotland’s first minister and SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon pushes for another vote before 2021.

Scottish voters were also moving away from both the Conservatives and the Labour Party, the Yougov poll showed.

“These patterns represent a clear warning to the Unionist camp that the pursuit of Brexit might yet produce a majority for independence,” polling expert Professor John Curtice wrote in The Times.
