PIMM’S CUP
HBO’s lavish series Boardwalk Empire has returned to our screens again on Sky Atlantic. Set in the era of America’s Prohibition, the thrust of the story focuses on bootlegging, politics, women’s lib and, of course, copious drinking. Pimm’s may have been scarce in the 1920s, but you can see the characters arm themselves with the Pimm’s Cup cocktail (Pimm’s, lemonade and perhaps a slice of cucumber): a perennial classic on and off screen.
OLD FASHIONED
Every man should know how to drink an Old Fashioned, and while we’re at it, every woman too. Mad man Don Draper’s default cocktail, this drink is the ultimate in cool. The classic mix of bourbon (or rye), bitter-soaked sugar cube, and club soda combines into one of the best cocktails of all time.
DAIQUIRI
The best twist on the classic daiquiri (rum, lime juice and sugar) that we’ve tasted is the Anise and Nephew, from Callooh Callay in Shoreditch. The drink, as created by Sean Ware, is served in a coupette glass, and the rum, which has a banana-like richness to it, works nicely with the fresh pineapple juice.
