WHERE TO GO
Planten un Blomen is Hamburg’s Hyde Park and you can’t beat it for beautiful flora (its name translates as “plants and flowers”). Look out for the Japanese garden and tea house located in the centre of the park

WHERE TO EAT
Fried plaice with potatoes, pickled herrings and labskaus (a Hamburgian delicacy of minced beef, potatoes and onion) – in a traditional setting you could do much worse than Fischerhaus, a lively restaurant popular with local families. Visit restaurant-fischerhaus.de

WHERE TO GO
Hamburg’s barefoot beer garden StrandPauli is one of seven beach-based clubs that run along the quay in the trendy area of St Pauli. On a hot summer’s day, it matches anywhere in Berlin for atmosphere. Visit strandpauli.de

WHERE TO STAY
Situated next to Hamburg’s picturesque harbour, The Madison indulges its guests with spacious rooms, smart décor and exemplary service. There’s also a well-appointed gym and spa if you overdo it on the pilsener. Visit madisonhotel.de
