WHERE TO STAY
Stay in the heart of the theatre district in the equally showy Hotel Teatro. Known for its striking black and gold interiors, it’s also home to a Portuguese fine-dining restaurant and an impressive selection of port. From £102 a night. Hotelteatro.pt

WHERE TO EAT
Housed below the stock exchange, Bull & Bear is run by one of Portugal’s most famous chefs, Miguel Castro Silva, and it serves up a six-course tasting menu that takes the country’s heavy traditional fare and turns it into delicate and delicious dishes.
Avenida da Boavista 3431 00 351 226 107 669

WHERE TO DRINK
This old townhouse is one of the city’s coolest bars, especially for a wide range of live music, from jazz to rock. Concerts and exhibitions are held there regularly and the style is a blend of retro and contemporary design. Breyner85.com

WHAT TO DO
Carry on the theatrical theme with a visit to Sao Francisco church. From the outside, it looks like one of Europe’s many 14th century Gothic and Baroque cathedrals, but the inside is covered in pure gold – about 400kg of it, apparently.  Rua do Infante D. Henrique
