A brief history of time: Bremont’s new Stephen Hawking watch
A new watch celebrating the legacy of Stephen Hawking could be a black hole for your bank account but a great leap for your wrist
Four years have elapsed since the original MoonSwatch was released, kickstarting a global phenomena that has seen collectors queuing for days outside retailers in a bid to get their hands on one.
This month Bremont has gone even further than the moon, creating a watch that’s inspired by one of the great mysteries of the universe: the black hole. The Bremont Supernova Hawking has been released to celebrate the life of professor Stephen Hawking – and being limited to just 600 pieces, expect an even harder time getting hold of one than the MoonSwatch.
Based on the Supernova Chronograph, it’s a beautiful creation, each element designed to reflect space engineering, from the matte black ceramic-coated stainless steel case to the geometric dial that’s inspired by the distinctive shape of a solar array. There are two chronograph counters that feature slivers of real meteorite, and above the date window is the famous Bekenstein-Hawking entropy formula Hawking used to calculate the entropy of a black hole.

Perhaps most impressive of all, on the flipside, the caseback features the swirling outer limits of a black hole’s event horizon, through which the whirring cogs of the movement can be seen.
It’s available with a choice of steel bracelet or black rubber strap, which are quick release, should you struggle to make up your mind.
“From its deep black DLC (diamond-like ceramic) finish to its striking geometric design, every detail draws influence from the way light bends, warps and disappears at the edge of a black hole,” according to Bremont.
With so many little physics easter eggs and the limited supply, the Bremont Supernova Hawking will be catnip to collectors. It’s still available to purchase through the Bremont website but expect supplies to soon dwindle. If you want to bravely go where few watch collectors have gone before, now’s your chance.
