The founders of Absolute Radio have launched a new DJ-less national radio station featuring the voice of a popular sci-fi actor.

The Union Jack radio station, which promises to celebrate British artists, will go live at 11am today.

The station is launching with a promise of “no irritating radio deejays and less interruptions”, but will feature the voice of Paul Darrows, who played Kerr Avon in Blake’s 7.

Union Jack promises to be a fully interactive national DAB+ station, available to stream live at unionjack.co.uk, via RadioPlayer and on an app.

Listeners will be in control of what the station plays, with tracks pushed up and down a playlist in a votes system.

The station has been founded by co-chief executives Donnach O’Driscoll and Ian Walker, along with Clive Dickens. They also run local radio brand Jack FM.

Dickens said:

UK commercial national radio is over dominated by three companies and it’s time for a complete shake up. Our team has already created two of the most successful radio brands in the last ten years and we know all great things come along in threes.
