Adebayor set to join Tevez at Man City
MANCHESTER City boss Mark Hughes was last night on the verge of clinching a £50m double striker swoop after being given the green light in his bid to pair Carlos Tevez with Arsenal’s Emmanuel Adebayor.
Hughes confirmed that big-spending City had agreed a deal to sign £30m-rated Tevez, who left rivals Manchester United last month after the Argentine decided not to make his two-year loan deal permanent.
Tevez, 25, is now expected to put pen-to-paper on a five-year deal at Eastlands today subject to a medical.
“It’s terrific news,” Hughes beamed. “He is an international of the highest class who possesses all the attributes to help drive us forward. This is yet another deal that shows the commitment of the owner to make this club the very best it can be.
Tevez’s advisor Kia Joorabchian added: “He has to sign the next five years with a club he believes has got ambition to go forward in the Premier League, a club with history and one that really wants to achieve things.”
With the Tevez deal in the bag, City have now opened talks with Arsenal about a £20m deal for Togo frontman Adebayor, who looks set to be offloaded by Gunners boss Arsene Wenger after an indifferent season.
Hughes showed a passing interest in Adebayor back in January but will now step up his pursuit of the 25-year-old, who scored 10 goals in 26 Premier League games last season.
Adebayor was accused by Arsenal fans of showing a lack of commitment and has hinted that he would be interested in a move away.
Whether that interest extends to a club playing in the Europa League next season remains to be seen, but ambitious City have already convinced £30m pair Gareth Barry and Roque Santa Cruz to join their revolution.
