Amazon’s unstoppable expansion continues with new warehouse in Northamptonshire

Amazon has announced plans to open a new warehouse in Daventry, Northamptonshire, in 2017, creating 300 new jobs.

The tech giant said it is responding to growing demand for its services and wants to use the opening to offer more products to its customers.

The company will start recruiting for the new positions in the coming months, and is looking for operations managers, engineers, HR employees and IT specialists.

Warehouses are currently under the political spotlight after accusations of poor working practices at Sports Direct's Shirebrook warehouse, and Amazon has been keen to highlight how well it treats its workers.

Amazon said it offers "competitive wages", with all employees starting on £7.35 an hour at least, moving up to £8.15 an hour after two years. Employees also get private medical insurance and an employee discount.

John Tagawa, Amazon's vice president of UK operations, said: "We look forward to welcoming 300 new recruits to the Amazon team with competitive wages and comprehensive benefits starting from day one.

"The new site in Daventry will enable us to continue to expand our product selection, support more third party sellers including small businesses with our fulfilment expertise and meet growing customer demand in the UK."

Sports Direct was slammed in a recent report for not paying its warehouse workers the minimum wage, and Asos has had to defend itself against accusations it was treating its warehouse workers badly.

With the growth of online retail, more and more retail workers are now in warehouses. Sainsbury's recently opened a warehouse in east London to meet the growing demand for online grocery delivery. It has also started delivering food on bikes, similar to tech start up Deliveroo, which pedals restaurant food around the capital.
