Ambitious Watson’s not done yet
BRITAIN’S teenage sensation Heather Watson insists she’s not played the final match of her clay court season yet as she prepares to take on Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi in the second round of the French Open.
The 19-year-old (right) from Guernsey scored a landmark victory on Monday when she became the first British woman to win a match at Roland Garros for 17 years. Watson is back in action today against the 16th seed and insists returning home to ready herself for the upcoming grass court swing of the tour is the last thing on her mind.
She said: “I’m very optimistic. I’ve been playing well, I came through qualifying and I’m confident. I’m going in positive. I believe in myself, which is the most important thing.”
Her mood contrasted greatly to that of British No1 Andy Murray who is well versed in negotiating his way through the first week of a grand slam event.
Murray, who faces Italy’s Simone Bolelli today, said: “Heather will win many more here. But it’s very different for me. When you play your first few grand slams, it’s a great experience. I’m still very happy to be here, but I’m here to win the thing.”
Big guns through
WORLD No2 Novak Djokovic breezed through to the third round of the French Open, securing his 39th consecutive win this year in the process, when Victor Hanescu pulled out while trailing 6-4, 6-1, 2-3. The Serb will now face Martin del Potro. Roger Federer also won through in straight sets against Maxime Teixeira, while in the women’s draw both World No1 Caroline Wozniacki and defending champion Francesca Schiavone advanced.
