Architects Foster and Gehry to design part of Battersea Station
THE OWNERS of Battersea Power Station have commissioned world renowned architects Frank Gehry and Norman Foster to co-design part of the iconic £8bn scheme.
Their practices Gehry Partners and Foster + Partners will design a new high street linking the development and the new northern line extension as well as 1,200 surrounding homes.
It will be the first building in London for the Canadian-American Gehry, whose best known works include the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. “Our goal is to help create a neighbourhood and a place for people to live that respects the iconic Battersea Power Station while connecting it into the broader fabric of the city. We hope to create a design that is uniquely London,” Gehry said.
The so-called phase three will comprise of two residential development areas located either side of the high street, as well as a 200-room hotel overlooking the Power Station, a town square, a library, 350,000 square feet of shops and restaurant space.
Work on restoring the Grade II listed building kicked-off this month with the first chimney expected to be dismantled in February 2014.
