Asda leads way as supermarkets slash fuel prices

Drivers will get a boost at the pumps as Asda led supermarkets to cut prices this week.

The supermarket will tomorrow slash prices by 3p per litre of diesel at all its 322 petrol stations across the UK, and 1p for petrol.

It brings the price to 128.7p for diesel and 126.7p for petrol.

The move follows weeks of falling global oil prices, with international standard Brent crude hitting a four-month low this afternoon.

Morrisons and Sainsbury’s followed suit later in the day, announcing price cuts of up to 3p per litre.

“Once again, Asda has led the way while other retailers sit back,” said Luke Bosdet, the AA’s fuel price spokesman.

However, falling oil prices warrant a bigger decrease according to insurer RAC, which just yesterday called for retailers to drop prices at the pumps.

“We view this round of cuts very much as a good start. We should really see more in the next week or so,” its fuel spokesperson Simon Williams said.

“We would very much like to see retailers reflect wholesale price reductions more closely.”

Asda’s Dave Tyrer said: “Motorists have seen rising prices at the pumps since March so it will be … welcomed.”
