Ashes tour is not about retribution, says Strauss
ENGLAND captain Andrew Strauss insists they will not be on a revenge mission when they travel to Australia for the Ashes this winter.
Strauss is one of seven players in the 16-man squad who were on the receiving end of a series whitewash when the contest was last held Down Under, four years ago.
But in the second part of an exclusive interview with Morning Wire he says: “I don’t think it’ll be on their minds. This tour is not retribution for what happened last time or anything like that. “There were some lessons learned. Most of the team weren’t involved in it. Ultimately, we’re holding the Ashes at the moment and we still want to be holding the Ashes in six months’ time.”
Strauss led England to Ashes glory on home soil last year and was also part of the iconic side who recaptured the urn in 2005.
But while the current crop have enjoyed strong results, with a Twenty20 World Cup and seven wins from eight Tests this year, he believes their true measure is to come. “The greatest tests lie ahead,” he adds. “At the end of this winter we’ll be in a much better place to measure exactly where we are as a side.”
