BARCLAYS Capital has taken its plans to become a global investment-banking player up a gear by naming Stefano Marsaglia, the respected Rothschild banker, as chairman of its financial institutions group (FIG).

In the latest in a series of high-profile hires Barclays has snapped up the Italian heavyweight, who has spent the last 17 years at the famous City investment bank Rothschild.

The 54-year-old was most recently co-head of investment banking for Europe at Rothschild. He was also co-global head of its FIG unit, which advises financial services firms such as banks and insurers.

He has advised on giant deals for Spanish banking giant Santander, Italian lender UniCredit and Intesa, another Italian bank.
