BBM sees over 10m downloads for Android and iPhone in first 24 hours
In less than 24 hours over 10m customers have downloaded Blackberry's instant messaging app – BBM – now available on Android and iOS platforms, making it one of the best single-day openings for a mobile app.
Whether many will use the service is another matter. Rival messenger WhatsApp has a pretty entrenched position as its CEO Jan Koum announced yesterday that the instant messaging service has 350m monthly active users.
Some users have struggled to download the app. A queueing system (now common with many mobile apps) frustrated some customers. The software release was setback by a leaked release distributed via the Crackberry forum.
Blackberry had to halt their iPhone app rollout after that unofficial app began causing "issues" with the service.
BBM rose through Apple's app store rankings to be the number one free app in more than 75 countries in its first 24 hours, including the US, Canada, the UK, Indonesia and most of the Middle East.
