BDO launches anonymous whistleblowing app
Accounting firm BDO has launched BDO Tipoffs, a mobile app, to allow whistleblowers at client companies to report misconduct anonymously, according to reports.
The firm’s new app, launched yesterday, is free to download and use on android and apple smartphones, according to South African publication Engineering News, which first reported the news.
Currently organisations must sign up for the BDO Tipoffs service, which is available in South Africa, though the business noted that anonymous tipoffs have been proven to work across the globe in the fight against corruption.
The app will allow smartphone users to safely blow the whistle on their employer, and maintain anonymity, said BDO forensics head Annemari Krugel.
“We have recognised a need to offer support beyond compliance,” said Krugel.
“As a leading auditing and advisory firm,” she continued, “we must be at the forefront of the fight against wrongdoing in this country.”
She added that users are encouraged to report on any type of corruption or abuse in their organisation, including discrimination, cheating, plagiarism and sexual harassment.
The Tipoffs app allows users to upload photographs, documents, video files and locations, with no personal information taken during the registration process, according to BDO South Africa.
They can either make a simple report, or engage in a two-way conversation with a trained and independent moderator to help submit their report – both anonymously.
After submitting a report through the app, whistleblowers can stay informed of updates on the case.
