Best British universities to study economics ranked: Oxford, Warwick, Cambridge Surrey and Heriot-Watt make top five

British students with ambitions to be the next Paul Krugman should be setting their sights on obtaining a degree from Oxford, Warwick or Cambridge.

And other highly commended institutions were Surrey, Heriot-Watt, Leeds, Coventry, University College London as well as Kent.

At least that's according to the Guardian's university league tables for 2016 which crunched results from the annual National Student Survey. It looked at spending per student, the student/staff ratio, graduate career prospects, entry requirements, value added as well as final year students' course satisfaction.

Unlike some of its competitors, the Guardian's university ranking doesn't include a measure of research output, which is generally measured by the number of times a piece of research is "cited" in another piece of research.

And here's a quick look at which universities made it into the top 20:

1. Oxford
2. Warwick
3. Cambridge
4. Surrey
5. Heriot-Watt
6. Leeds
7. Coventry
8. University College London (UCL)
9. Kent
10. Durham
11. Portsmouth
12. UEA
13. London School of Economics (LSE)
14. Bristol
15. Aston
16. Strathclyde
17. Oxford Brookes
18. Nottingham
19. Lancaster
20. Queen Mary
