BILL OF THE WEEK

PERHAPS it’s just me, but there seem to have been an awful lot of City types eschewing their fine dining venues recently for local Indian and Chinese haunts where they can splash out, safe in the knowledge it won’t cost the earth. At £1,229.85, a curry for four people might sound like a pricey night out, you see, but it’s all a matter of degree – dinner for the same quartet at the more traditional establishments in the capital would be infinitely more wallet-busting.

On this particular Thursday, our diners ate papadoms, mixed starters, chicken curry, fish masala and lamb rogan josh, along with the requisite Cobra beer, a bottle of Louis Roederer Cristal, three bottles of Sassicaia wine, one of Steininger (a little-known Austrian sparkling wine) and a round of post-prandial Hennessy Paradis cognac. What’s not to love?
