TfL does something ahead of schedule for once: Bond Street tube station re-opens for Jubilee line London Underground travellers
Christmas shoppers can enjoy the relief of easy access to the heart of London’s shopping district, as Bond Street station partially re-opens for business today.
However beleaguered secret santas weighed down with stocking-fillers will have to wait until mid-December to use the tube station as an escape route from the busy retail hub.
Jubilee and Central line travellers are now able to change at the station, and from mid-December onwards the modernised station will be fully open.
Passengers were not expected to be able to exit the station at this stage, but works connecting a new ticket hall with the existing station have been completed ahead of schedule.
Work on redeveloping Bond Street station will continue beyond Christmas and the New Year however, as part of the London Underground’s £10bn programme of improvements. By 2017, a year before Crossrail arrives, the station will have capacity for the expected increase of 155,000 to 225,000 daily passengers.
Steven Medway from the New West End Company, which represents the 200 retail businesses in the area, commented:
Bond Street station is being transformed right under our feet and once completed will become a brand new entrance to the world’s best shopping district. With the additional space created, journeys will become easier and quicker.From this December, when Christmas shopping will be in full swing, all lines will again stop at Bond Street for full access to the shops.
