Borthwick gives England injury scare
ENGLAND captain Steve Borthwick has emerged as a major doubt for Saturday’s final Six Nations fixture against France.
Saracens skipper Borthwick was sent for treatment on a nagging knee injury after taking part in light training yesterday.
Manager Martin Johnson, has, however, conceded defeat in Ugo Monye recovering from a neck injury sustained against Scotland.
The Harlequins wing has been released along with lock Courtney Lawes, who drops out for the returning Simon Shaw, and out-of-form full-back Delon Armitage, who is dropped altogether, paving the way for Ben Foden to win his first cap.
Johnson names his team for the Paris clash at lunchtime today, but conceded he may have to do without the experienced Borthwick.
“Steve has gone for treatment for a long-term wear-and-tear issue he has got with his knee,” said Johnson.
Asked about Borthwick’s chances of facing France, he added: “I don’t know at the moment. He has to go and seek some advice. Hopefully it is just precautionary and he will be fine. Lots of guys carry things because they play a lot of rugby.”
Johnson also has injury concerns over fly-half Jonny Wilkinson, who, like Monye, had to be replaced in Saturday’s 15-15 draw with Scotland.
Wilkinson will only be allowed to play if he passes a series of tests.
