Borthwick’s our man, insists Easter
HARLEQUINS’ Nick Easter admits it is flattering to be talked about as the next England captain – but insists Steve Borthwick is still the man to lead the Six Nations campaign.
Borthwick has been handed the captain’s armband in every match since Martin Johnson took over as coach in April 2008, but the Saracens lock has yet to be installed on a long-term basis after coming under fire during the autumn internationals when England were beaten by Australia and New Zealand.
Reports have suggested that Easter is being primed for the role, but while the No8 is honoured to be seen as captain material, he continues to throw his support behind the present incumbent.
“It is flattering that people think of you in that light but I would give Steve my backing for the captaincy,” Easter said. “Steve is a tremendous captain. He brings so much intensity and professionalism to every training session.
“When he says something he isn’t just saying it for the sake of it. Steve played some of his best rugby for England in the last two games as well.
“He has been captaining Sarries well this season. They’ve been there or thereabouts at the top of the league and I think he’s a natural leader.”
