Battersea Power Station third stage: Construction firm Bouygues UK wins £1bn redevelopment deal
The third and final phase of the Battersea Power Station redevelopment is about to kick off.
The developers behind the regeneration of Europe's largest red brick building have awarded Bouygues UK a £1bn-plus contract to build a new high street on the 42-acre site as well as 1,305 homes designed by architects Norman Foster and Frank Gehry.
The new pedestrianised high street, known as The Electric Boulevard, will be the main gateway to the iconic Thames-side building, connecting the Northern Line Extension station to the south of the site with the Power Station itself.
Foster, who was behind the Gherkin, has designed a single wave-like building called The Skyline that will stretch along one side of the high street. Gehry’s part, a cluster of five buildings called Prospect Place, is anchored by a flower-shaped building and will flank the other side of the boulevard.
There will also be 350,000 square feet of shops and restaurants, a new hotel, as well as a roof garden on the top of the Foster + Partners scheme.
Battersea Power Station Development Company (BPSDC) said work on the third phase is due to start early next year, alongside the on-going construction of Circus West, a collection of 800 townhouses that forms the first phase of the scheme, and the regeneration of the red brick Power Station itself.
The construction contract awarded to Bouygues will have a value in excess of £1bn, making it one of the largest private building contracts ever to be awarded.
BPSDC chief executive Rob Tincknell, said: “The appointment of Bouygues UK as preferred contractor to build Phase 3 – the gateway to the Power Station – is a major milestone and increases the total area under construction on site to approximately five million square feet."
