Brace yourselves: Donald Trump could be coming to the UK next year
Donald Trump could make a state visit to the UK as soon as next year, Downing Street has confirmed.
Trump has already invited Prime Minister Theresa May to visit the US, and now officials have confirmed that plans are being drawn up for a reciprocal invite.
A spokeswoman for Theresa May said today a formal invitation is "under consideration", with 2017 one of the options being evaluated.
The government extends invites to visiting heads of state on behalf of the Queen.
However, such hospitality is relatively rare, with the UK usually restricting itself just a handful of visits every year.
Most recently, the UK hosted President Santos of Colombia, and took the opportunity to announce a raft of new trading arrangements with the Latin American nation.
A Trump visit would likely spark speculation of similar talks, though the UK is unable to negotiate any formal trade terms while it remains an EU member state.
