Business leaders from across Europe have called for UK citizens to vote to remain in the Union.

BusinessEurope issued a statement from its annual summit today saying its members “firmly wish” to see the UK stay an “active and positive” EU member.

“The UK has played a crucial role over the past forty years in shaping the development of Europe with trade and the single market at its core,” the group said in a statement.

“A vote to leave the EU will only heighten the uncertainty around current and future investments as some tough negotiations will then begin.”

The call is the latest in a flood of warnings over the risks of Brexit.

Earlier today the Organisation for Economic Development and Co-operation (OECD) warned that a vote to leave the European Union would set off a chain reaction of market turmoil across the global economy.

The European business leaders' opinions were echoed by UK chiefs.

“Our allies across 33 other European countries who speak for millions of firms of all sizes want to see us build on our decades-long partnership,” said Paul Drechsler, president of the Confederation of British Industry.

The UK takes to the polls on 23 June to decide its future in the EU.
