CRICKET: Former England batsman Mark Butcher announced his retirement from cricket last night with immediate effect.

The Surrey captain, 36, scored 38 first-class centuries – eight of them for England – in a career spanning 17 years.

He managed five County Championship matches for Surrey this season but has now admitted defeat in his battle against ongoing knee problems following surgery a fortnight ago.
