Button cheered by boost to plan for central London grand prix
FORMER world champion Jenson Button’s dream of racing in a Formula One grand prix through London’s streets could yet become a reality after the government launched a six-week consultation yesterday into staging closed-road motor sports events.
Governing body the Motor Sports Association is hoping to change legislation that currently prohibits races from being staged on closed public roads in Britain.
And Button hopes plans first released in 2011 of a 5.1km route past some of London’s most famous landmarks can come to fruition.
“The thought of a race through the capital’s streets was only a dream when they initiated the project, but this week’s changes to the law bring the idea a step closer to reality,” he said. “When you really picture what it would look like it’s truly mind blowing.”
