Capello gets the call on future of Terry
THE Football Association last night broke their silence on the John Terry scandal, insisting the future of the England captain rests solely on the shoulders of coach Fabio Capello.
The Chelsea star is facing calls to be stripped of the England captaincy after reports of an alleged affair with the former girlfriend of international team-mate Wayne Bridge swept through the weekend’s media.
Terry has received full support from club boss Carlo Ancelotti, but with fellow defender Bridge expected to join his ex-Chelsea team-mate in the World Cup squad this summer, Capello has to decide on how the dynamics of the dressing room will be affected by the revelations.
Capello is back on official duty as England boss on Thursday before he makes the trip to Warsaw for Sunday’s Euro 2012 qualifying draw.
But the Italian will be keen to discuss the matter before he leaves for Poland, and in plenty of time for when his side take on Africa Cup of Nations champions Egypt in a World Cup warm-up match at Wembley on 3 March.
The FA have remained silent on the matter until last night when they issued a statement confirming that Terry’s future will be determined solely by the manager following discussions with top FA chiefs.
It read: “Fabio is fully up to speed with developments regarding John Terry. He spoke with our chairman Lord
Triesman and chief executive Ian Watmore today, who both backed him to make the best decision for England on footballing grounds.
“Fabio is dealing with the matter in his own way using his extensive experience as a football manager.”
