Champions League semi-final draw: Manchester City draw Real Madrid while future manager Pep Guardiola faces Atletico Madrid with Bayern Munich

Manchester City avoided an awkward showdown with future manager Pep Guardiola after drawing Real Madrid in their first ever Champions League semi-final.

The competition's only remaining Premier League representative will face off against Cristiano Ronaldo and co in an all-star battle for a place in this year's Champions League final on May 28.

Guardiola, bidding to finally take his Bayern team into the final after back-to-back semi-final exits in 2014 and 2015, faces off against Atletico Madrid who knocked out favourites Barcelona in the quarter-final.

City and Real Madrid faced each other in the 2012/13 group stage. The two sides drew 1-1 in Manchester after two late goals in the Bernabeu gave Real Madrid a 3-2 win.

Should Manuel Pellegrini lead City to victory against his former employers, they will be designated the home team in the final at the San Siro in Milan.

The Chilean manager, who will make way for Guardiola in the summer, managed Real Madrid for a single season in 2009/10.

Real Madrid are the most successful side in Champions League history and became the first team to win it 10 times in 2014.

Yet there are question marks over the unbalanced nature of their team as well as rookie manager Zinedine Zidane's inexperience managing at this level.
