The Charlie Charlie challenge takes over Twitter – but what is it and how do you play?

A spooky new game has taken over Twitter – but what is the Charlie Charlie challenge all about?

Thousands of people have started playing this Ouija-inspired game, with players speculating over its supposed origins as a way of contacting a Mexican spirit called Charlie.

Players place two pencils on a piece of paper in the shape of a cross with the words “yes” and “no” drawn in opposite corners. They then call out “Charlie, Charlie can we play?” twice and the so-called spirit will make the pencil point either to yes or no.

Once “connected” players can ask Charlie yes-or-no questions. At the end of the game users should chant “Charlie, Charlie can we stop” until the pencil tips towards a yes.

The game appears to have been around for some years but exploded on Twitter over the bank holiday. And while some people seem to believe users are summoning up a Mexican demon, others are taking it somewhat less seriously.
