Chester are liquidated by HMRC
CHESTER CITY were wound-up by the High Court yesterday, although Cardiff City and Southend United were handed lifelines.
Blue Square Premier side Chester owed HM Revenue & Customs £26,125 in unpaid taxes and were liquidated after 126 years in existence.
But a fans group have vowed to resurrect the club by setting up a ‘phoenix’ team in a lower league.
David Evans of Chester City Fans United said: “125 years of history have been extinguished today but that’s just the body of the club – its soul lives on.
“We want to atone for the way the club has been run.”
Championship club Cardiff, meanwhile, have been given 56 days to pay their outstanding tax bill of £1.9m.
The Bluebirds hope to raise funds from the sale of two plots of land around the Cardiff City Stadium, but must pay up by 5 May.
League One club Southend have been granted a 35-day extension to pay a £183,000 bill to HMRC.
