China crisis for Uber as taxi app is facing crackdown in Beijing
Controversial cab app Uber is facing a ban in Beijing, with officials in the Chinese capital saying that internet hailing apps violate rules against illegal taxis.
The San Francisco-based company has faced numerous regulatory difficulties over the past few months. Use of the app is no longer permitted in New Delhi after one of its drivers allegedly raped a passenger.
The app is also banned in Spain and Brussels, and is facing legal challenges in Germany, the Netherlands and Taiwan.
And earlier this week, New York suspended five out of Uber’s six bases in the city after the company refused to hand over records. Despite its problems, the business operates across 53 countries and has been valued at over $40bn (£26.5bn).
Uber was unable to provide comment on the Beijing ban at the time of going to press.
