Cidermen top the table as Notts are left frustrated
SOMERSET moved two points clear at the top of the County Championship as heavy rain continued to play havoc with the final round of matches.
Former England opener Marcus Trescothick smashed 75 as the Cidermen picked up four bonus points to leapfrog Nottinghamshire in pursuit of a first-ever title.
Somerset finished the day on 226-4 after bowling Durham out for 286 at the Riverside.
They took full advantage of Notts’ inactivity against Lancashire at Old Trafford, where only 28 overs have been possible in two days. The leaders ended the day on 89-2.
Elsewhere, Dewald Nel halted Yorkshire’s title assault with 6-62 as relegation-threatened Kent fought back at Headingley. The Tykes were dismissed for 261. Kent then rallied to 216-6 in reply.
Fellow strugglers Warwickshire finished on 29-0 in response to Hampshire’s 217.
Matthew Hoggard took 5-48 as Leicestershire made one last push towards promotion to division one against Northamptonshire.
Second place Glamorgan were frustrated by the weather as rain washed out day two of their match against Derbyshire at Cardiff.
